The Landmark Piezzi Ranch and Farmhouse

The Victor Piezzi ranch farmhouse is one of the oldest homes in the Hall School District. It is a high gabled farmhouse surrounded by towering evergreens and gnarled old olive trees, situated four miles west of Santa Rosa. It stands on a part of the original 520-acre farm purchased in the early 1880's to establish one of the first dairies in the region.

The original ranch borders modern-day Occidental Road on the south, to Hall Road on the north, and by Piezzi Road to the east. The current Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club is on part of the old ranch.

The initial single-story home was remodeled into a lovely two-story home to accommodate his growing family.

Olive trees and a beloved European Filbert tree stood in the Piezzi farmhouse yards. Mr. and Mrs. Piezzi brought them from Switzerland on a trip to their homeland taken shortly after their marriage. Some of the first apple, pear and cherry trees planted in the area are still flourishing today.

Adjacent to the farmhouse was a top-quality fruit orchard of twenty acres, composed of Bartlett pears, apples, peaches and plums of many varieties.

Further afield on the ranch flourished fifty acres of grapes for both winemaking and for table use. Hay was grown on a vast 75-acre field area, with the remainder of the lovely Piezzi ranch pastureland devoted to livestock grazing.

An exceptional stockman, Piezzi bred prized Shorthorn Durham cattle, a versatile old-world breed known for excellent milk production and meat quality, as well as the trainability for indispensable ranch work in harness.

Mr. Piezzi immediately saw potential for a premium butter and cream industry in the area due to its excellent rolling pasturelands and ample water. The small creamery built on the ranch property was accredited with being the "first such industry in the county" by the Sonoma Democrat, the forerunner of today's Press Democrat newspaper serving Sonoma County.
