Moving can be both exciting and stressful. However, with some planning, moving into your
new home can be much easier.
- Create a HOME file for all the important documents concerning your new home such as tax, refinancing, insurance papers and similar documents.
- File change-of-address forms, utility and cable services, voter registration, DMV, subscriptions and children's school papers right away to avoid delays.
- Start a list of future repairs, décor and remodeling ideas, and maintenance needs and consult it often.
- Measure and note all windows, doorways and interior dimensions for handy reference when shopping for window treatments, rugs, etc.
Develop a plan.
Think in terms of priority, and use a system of colors or markings on boxes. Inform your moving company of your system. They can help sort things just by stacking each rooms' boxes in marked priority groups. Have your movers place marked top-priority "survival" items together in a separate uncluttered area. This helps to avoid having to hunt for buried boxes on the hectic first few days of unpacking.
For boxed items, mark or color-code to easily distinguish between:
- Top-priority items you need for daily living - make a "survival" kit with personal necessities, some soothing comfort items and a few kitchen essentials.
- Medium-priority items; useful things that can wait a few weeks to be unpacked.
- Deep-storage items; consider selling or donating as much of this as possible in advance to keep moving costs down!
For Furniture pieces, mark or color-code for each room, on each piece. Your movers can save time by bringing items straight into the correct room.
